Screening
What is a cardio-vascular screening?
In the medical profession, we view screening for a disease paramount to early
detection. A screening test is an exam that is designed to find undiagnosed
disease, but does not necessarily provide the fine details about the disease.
Therefore, a cardio-vascular screening is designed as a cost effective way to
identify patients who could be at risk for significant disease. If a patient
has a positive result, further testing will be required. This may include
repeat ultrasound testing. Your doctor will advise you whether repeat or
additional testing is necessary. Patients should not be discouraged if repeat
testing is required. Remember that a screening is a baseline test that will
aid in identifying patients at risk for disease.
Our Foundation offers financial grants to other organizations that have an
interest in providing preventative care to their community. These organizations
will outline what testing will be performed at their location. The typical testing
will follow the United States Preventative Services Task Force's Guide to Clinical
Preventative Services. This may include but is not limited to, screening the
abdominal aorta for aneurysm disease, carotid artery stenosis, peripheral artery
blockage, blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure evaluations. Other testing
may be preformed depending on the site of the exam.
Be aware, screening exams are not definitive tests. If you are found to have
cardio-vascular disease, your doctor will guide your follow up care. Screening
programs are not designed to follow or evaluate known vascular disease. This screening
does not constitute or replace your regular follow up cardiovascular testing or
examinations. There are limitations to screening exams, and while they are quite
good at identifying disease, they do not replace a full problem focused exam.
Who should be screened?
Any community member with a family history of cardio-vascular disease and/or is over
50 years of age. Your screening site will provide further details if you are a
candidate for their screening event. Please find a listing of the exam sites on the
programs section. Please contact the exam site for event registration and eligibility
criteria.
Pediatric screening for high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes is
recommended in obese children over age 10 yrs. or in those children with a family
history of early onset of cardio-vascular disease.
How to schedule a screening:
A screening location can be found through this web site, in the programs section.
Contact information for the screening event will be provided. Each site may differ
in the types of screenings to be provided; please check with each location to assure
you will receive the testing desired.
Outreach Programs
Educational Programs
Public awareness and educational programs are a core value of our foundation.
Providing educational opportunities to the public increases the overall understanding
of this disease process. The foundation provides monthly physician led lectures to the
community on a range of topics. The topics include; abdominal aortic aneurysm disease,
understanding stroke, understanding your cholesterol, carotid artery disease, varicose
vein disease, understanding your blood pressure, peripheral artery disease and the
effects from childhood obesity. We feel that if you are well educated about
cardio-vascular disease you will be more likely to seek out appropriate care and to
follow your doctors care plan. Compliance with your care is vital to maintaining a
healthy lifestyle.
Our educational programs began in June 2009. We provide monthly educational programs
on topics relating to cardio-vascular diseases. The educational calendar is located
under our activities section. If your organization would like to arrange an educational
program, please contact us at your convenience. To locate educational programs in your
area, please go to the activities section of our web site.
